Filkov: We are starting a process for a functional and independent Judicial Council, free from political influences

The first of a series of expert debates was held today on the draft amendments and additions to the Law on the Judicial Council, prepared by the working group, established by the Ministry of Justice. The event is organized in cooperation and with the support of the "EU Support for the Rule of Law" project.

This is just one of several events for consulting the professional public that the Ministry of Justice plans to organize in order to ensure a transparent and inclusive process that will contribute to the improvement of the legal framework that governs the operation of the Judicial Council.

The Minister of Justice, Igor Filkov, in his address to the audience, said that the Judicial Council must function solely in the service of justice and this body should be reformed and work with the greatest integrity, focusing on professionalism and strict respect for the rule of law.

"Obviously, so far the functionality of the Judicial Council has been questioned on several occasions. We are starting an open and transparent process with the presence of the expert public, international organizations, as well as some of the non-governmental organizations to find the best possible solutions for a functional, above all, independent Judicial Council, free from any political influences," said the Minister of Justice, Igor Filkov.

The conclusions and recommendations from the round table will be the basis for further improvement of the text of the amendments and additions to the Law on Judicial Council. The discussions will be comprehensive, will include all relevant factors and will aim to create solutions that will guarantee the independence of these institutions.

It is expected that the planned four debates will end by the end of December, after which a concrete solution will be issued.
