Referring to the activities of the Ministry of Justice, Dereban pointed out that in the past period, the Ministry of Justice has paid special attention to further regulating the matter of victims of crimes in relevant laws.
"For the first time, laws were adopted that advance the rights of victims in criminal proceedings. Currently, the amendments to the Law on Criminal Procedure and the adoption of a new Criminal Code are extremely relevant. As particularly important in the criminal law area, I would like to highlight the adoption of the Law on the Office of Property Recovery and the Law on Payment of Monetary Compensation to Victims of Violent Crimes, which were adopted in November 2022 and began to be applied as of 25.05.2023. The aim is to provide monetary compensation to victims of crimes committed with violence, as assistance from the state, in accordance with the principle of social solidarity, and to prevent secondary victimization as additional suffering that victims may undergo from the attitude and treatment from the competent authorities" – emphasized Dereban in his address.
The Ministry of Justice has recently paid special attention to the amendments of the Law on Criminal Procedure. Taking into account the fact that this law represents a kind of constitution for human rights, the activities of the Ministry of Justice are aimed at harmonizing the law with the latest international standards in criminal procedure law, and especially the latest directives of the European Union in this area.
