The right to privacy and the protection of personal data are fundamental rights of every individual, which must be protected and respected in all spheres of life, including the justice system.
Marking the European Data Protection Day, the Minister of Justice, Igor Filkov, in his address at the event "EU Legal Framework for the Protection of Personal Data and the Right to Privacy in the Judiciary", pointed out that the justice system is one of the most sensitive areas when it comes to the processing of personal data.
"In the process of conducting legal proceedings and investigations, sensitive data are often processed that can have serious implications for the rights and freedoms of individuals. Therefore, it is important to ensure that any processing of such data will be carried out with the highest level of protection and respect for privacy. Personal data is a fundamental component of the right to privacy, which is guaranteed by the Constitution and international documents. The protection of this data is not only legal, but also an ethical imperative that protects citizens from abuse. The task of the state is to provide legal certainty for all citizens by creating a stable legal framework that guarantees the protection of privacy and the integrity of personal data in all spheres of life”, said Minister Filkov.
The Republic of North Macedonia is actively working to harmonize its legislation with European rules on the protection of personal data, in order to ensure a high level of protection of citizens’ privacy. Successful protection of personal data requires close cooperation between all stakeholders, as well as the exchange of knowledge and training on personal data protection will help in building capacities and exchanging experiences that will contribute to further harmonization of legislation with European standards.
The event was organized by the Center for Legal Research, the Academy of Judges and Public Prosecutors and the Macedonian Association of Young Lawyers as part of the EU project: “Effective Justice for the Protection of Fundamental Freedoms and the Right to Privacy in the Online Space”.
