The Minister of Justice, Jeton Shasivari, met with Nicole Varnes, the Acting Chief of Mission at the Embassy of the United States of America, to discuss key reform priorities in the judiciary and opportunities for further deepening of bilateral cooperation.
The strategic partnership with the United States of America represents strong support for the reform agenda of the Ministry of Justice, especially in strengthening the rule of law, improving the judicial system, and fighting corruption and organized crime. American expertise and institutional support are of particular importance for implementing essential reforms that will ensure more efficient institutions, greater legal certainty, and concrete results.
Special emphasis at the meeting was placed on the reform of the criminal legislation. Minister Shasivari emphasized the need to use American experience and expertise in this process, in order to create modern and efficient legal solutions that will contribute to more successful prevention and sanctioning of corruption and crime.
The focus of the talks was also the digitalization of the justice system, the legislative agenda and the strengthening of institutional capacities, as key segments of the reform process.
Minister Shasivari expressed gratitude for the continued support from the United States, especially for the contribution to strengthening institutions and the fight against transnational organized crime.
A concrete result of this partnership is the launched implementation of the project to support the implementation of the National Drug Strategy, funded by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) of the US Department of State.
Both sides confirmed their readiness to further deepen cooperation through specific projects, expert assistance and exchange of experiences, in order to ensure sustainable and measurable results from the reforms.
For the Ministry of Justice, the strategic partnership with the United States is more than an institutional cooperation. It is a significant support for a reform agenda the ultimate goal of which is a functional, independent and efficient judiciary, in which laws are consistently applied, institutions assume their responsibility, and citizens have confidence in justice.
